KEY POINTS

  • New "Transformers" movie is coming up in 2022
  • The "Transformers" sequels were not as good as the first movie
  • "Bumblebee" spinoff received positive reviews

A new “Transformers” movie is on the way after Paramount announced its release date.

The latest installment in the sci-fi action franchise is coming up in two years. The still untitled “Transformers” movie will be released on June 24, 2022.

Paramount is reportedly working on two different projects. One is with “Murder Mystery” scribe James Vanderbilt while the other is with “Army of the Dead” writer Joby Harold.

Vanderbilt’s project is inspired from the “Transformers” spinoff “Beast Wars” where robots transform into robotic animals like Cheetor (Cheeta), Optimus Primal (Gorilla), Rhinox (Rhinoceros) and more. On the other hand, Harold’s work is from the Bumblee universe. At the time, it is unclear which of the two projects will make it to production, Deadline reported.

According to Screenrant’s Dusty Stowe, the first “Transformers” movie directed by Michael Bay was a box office, but the sequels failed to match its success. The first film starred Shia LeBeouf as Sam Witwicky and the plot revolved in his relationship with Bumblebee. It has a broad humor and the actions sequences were thrilling.

However, he found the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” a “mess.” The story was incoherent because writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman didn’t have the chance to refine the script due to a writers strike.

Also, the next films still directed by Bay ruined Optimus Prime’s character. In the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” the favorite transformer became violent and aggressive. In “Transformer: Dark of the Moon,” Optimus continued to display a deranged character. When “The Last Knight“ debuted, Stowe felt that Bay’s heart was no longer in the franchise.

For Stowe, the “Transformers” movie failed to live up the hype. But the franchise was able to redeemed itself when it released the Bumblebee spinoff starring Hailee Steinfield and directed by Travis Knight. Even The New York Times gave “Bumblebee” a great review.

“Finally, a ‘Transformers’ Movie That’s Actually Good,” Glenny Kenny's review read.

Kenny wrote that “Transformers” is still a good movie if given to the right talent. He attended a paid preview screening for the movie and shared how another civilian praised the film.

“On the way out, and I swear I am not making this up, one of my fellow civilians proclaimed, ‘That was definitely better than Michael Bay,’” Kenny shared.

At present, there is no other details about the upcoming “Transformers” movie other than the release date. However, Paramount will surely announce the cast, producers, and director as the production progress.
