Nicki Minaj Denies Making Female Rappers Mainstream, Teases Big Surprises And Tour
Nicki Minaj has come under fire following reports she implied she is the reason why female rap music is mainstream. However, the “No Frauds” artist recently shared a lengthy Instagram post, calling out those who manipulated her words to make it seem as if she disregarded the female rappers who came before her and broke barriers.
On Tuesday, Minaj shared a video of her XXL interview, which features the quote that was taken out of context. In the video, Minaj credits herself with reintroducing female rap music into pop culture.
“My role in hip-hop has been super unique because when my first album came out there had been so much time where there wasn’t a female rap album out that went platinum, there wasn’t a big female rap presence right before I got in,” she says in the video.
“So, my role was really reintroducing the female rapper to pop culture,” she added.
After her words began to make headlines, the star clarified what she actually meant. “I see ppl remixing my words so let me post ‘exactly’ what I said for the intelligent ones in the back. Now, if you can find the part where I said ‘I made female rappers mainstream,’ I’ll give you $100,000.00,” she wrote in the caption of the post.
Minaj then reflected on the history of female rap music and scoffed at the idea of forgetting those who came before her. “Imagine me saying I made female rappers mainstream when there were so many women who already had platinum albums under their belts.”
The rapper went on to name the accomplishments of several female artists including Lauryn Hill, Eve, Missy Elliot, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, Queen Latifah and Trina.
Even though Minaj was in the hot seat for a moment, her loyal fans rallied behind her despite her misconstrued statement. “I appreciate the love but I never said that. Now what I DID say is right here for anyone w/their own brain to decipher words on their own,” she wrote.
The “Rake It Up” artist explained that she broke into the rap industry at a time when a female presence was lacking. “When I came out, there had been a drought of a few years where NO female rap album had gone platinum, females weren’t getting budgets, the industry did NOT believe in the female rapper anymore. They had stopped generating MONEY for labels,” she added.
“These are facts and nothing but the facts. So I ‘REINTRODUCED’ the ‘successful’ female rapper back to POP CULTURE. Showed big business we were major players in the game just like the boys were.”
Minaj ended her post by hinting at something fans have been waiting for, a tour. “See u guys on tour next year. I got a cpl BIG surprises,” she wrote.
Since Minaj declared that she would be working on new music in the beginning of 2017, fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of her new album. While she has not mentioned a release date, it’s clear that the rapper has something up her sleeve that she is confident will satisfy fans.
