Norwegian Cruise Ship Passengers Suffer Illness While On-board, Second Time This Week
Some passengers aboard the Norwegian Joy cruise ship reported minor medical complaints and were treated by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics after the ship docked at the San Pedro port early Sunday.
This is the second time passengers of that cruise line are offered medical assistance in a week.
According to LAFD, some patients on a Mexican Riviera cruise sought assistance following medical complaints. But none were taken to hospitals. The cause of the illness is not clear.
According to cruise news, the treatment for 20 patients “reporting unspecified illness” had been given as soon as the cruise ship docked. The ship has a capacity for more than 3,600 guests, per Norwegian Cruise Line.
In a statement, the cruise line said: “During Norwegian Joy's Mexican Riviera sailing, a few guests onboard experienced a stomach-related illness.”
“To mitigate any impact of this rare occurrence, we implemented stringent sanitation procedures. As always, we will continue to monitor this situation,” it said.
Norwegian Joy had a similar incident last week when some passengers traveling on cruise deals had to be treated for stomach flu symptoms on arrival from a Panama Canal voyage, per CNN report.
According to police sources, those passengers who arrived in the Port of Los Angeles on November 24 had shown infection from Norovirus, which the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attributed (CDC) to diarrhea.
Norovirus causes diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain.
Norwegian Cruise enforced special cleaning and disinfection procedures in response to the episode, the CDC said.
