‘Outlander’ Spinoff Might Not Be Lord John Grey Series
“Outlander” is one of Starz’s most successful shows, so it makes sense that a spinoff is in the works. However, it might not be the Lord John Grey TV show that fans expect.
Executive producer Ronald D. Moore revealed that there is more than one idea being pitched for the possible “Outlander” spinoff, but he declined to give details.
“We’re still talking about it. Starz is interested, We’re definitely in conversations. Sony and Starz are in conversations about a spinoff series, yeah,” Moore confirmed to Collider.
When pressed about what the sister show could be about, Moore revealed that the premise isn’t set in stone because they have multiple pitches for “Outlander” spinoffs. “We have more than one idea. We have a couple of ideas,” the writer revealed. “You know, it’s still an internal conversation so we’re not really prepared to go out and say what it is.”
That might be surprising to some fans since “Outlander” author Diana Gabaldon has a spinoff book series. The Lord John Grey books follow the character David Berry has played on the Starz TV show. The conflicted character is a gay man in the 18th century who happens to be from a noble family and is in the military. Gabaldon has written nearly 10 books and novellas focusing on him and his adventures away from Jamie and Claire Fraser.
A Lord John Grey spinoff could certainly be one of their ideas, but the fact that there are multiple pitches and Moore is reluctant to confirm details means that there could be a pitch for an original “Outlander” spinoff too.
Executive producer Matt B. Roberts indicated that a spinoff could be about anyone when he spoke with the Hollywood Reporter in 2016. “Oddly enough, we always joke about spinoffs, whether it's Lord John or Black Jack [Tobias Menzies] or this person or that person, because there is just so much material. [Author] Diana [Gabaldon] gives us so much in the books that you can probably make 10 series and the fans would watch it all,” he said.
That wouldn’t be too surprising. After all, the series has definitely taken some liberties with Gabaldon’s story. Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) storyline with Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) in the colonies was entirely developed for the show. The character died at the Battle of Culloden in the books. While the books provide a general outline, the show isn’t afraid to take creative license.
Fans will have to wait and see if the “Outlander” spinoff focuses on Lord John Grey or another character. Starz hasn’t officially ordered the project, but with the fervent dedication of the “Outlander” fans, it’s hard to imagine the network not capitalizing on that enthusiasm.
“Outlander” has been renewed for Season 6.
