Patty Jenkins On The Future Of ‘Wonder Woman’
As DC fans might still be wondering what “Wonder Woman 1984” is about, the movie's co-writer and director Patty Jenkins is already well ahead of the curve. Recently appearing at CCXP in São Paulo alongside Wonder Woman herself, actress Gal Gadot, Jenkins assures fans that her DC superhero movie franchise has been well-thought-out ahead of time.
Jenkins’ Amazons spin-off has seemingly been mulled over for quite some time. "We already have it all mapped out—it’s just a matter of will we change our minds and when," she told Deadline.
Having garnered $820 million worldwide with 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and recently becoming her own Funko Pop, Jenkins knows the future of “Wonder Woman” is likely in her hands, but the director doesn’t want to rush the franchise, nor oversaturate it with content.
“I think what we don’t want to do is do it back to back,” Jenkins said. “It’s been great doing these two movies back to back, but I think it’s important to give it a little rest in between—and I like doing other things in between.”
While “Wonder Woman” may be among the most popular of Jenkins’ movies, aside from 2003’s “Monster,” she’s most notable for her TV directorial credits, such as “Entourage,” “The Killing,” and most recently “I Am the Night.” Though it remains unclear, Jenkins could return to television amid the wait for a potential “Wonder Woman 3” or Amazon spinoff.
“I never want to make decisions too far in advance,” Jenkins admits. “We [Gadot and Jenkins] have to see if we both feel like making the movie we think we want to make when the moment comes.”
While the probability of a “Wonder Woman” spinoff still languishes in uncertainty, DC fans await with bated breath as the forthcoming entry into the franchise is nearly finished post-production. Featuring Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord, the “Wonder Woman 1984” villain, as well as Kristen Wiig in the role of the Cheetah and potential love interest to Diana, the sequel to Jenkins’ 2017 hit will be yet another stepping stone for both the director and the saga as a whole.
“Wonder Woman 1984” lassos into theaters on July 5.
