KEY POINTS
- Prince Charles called Meghan Markle "Tungsten" because she was brutal and harsh underneath the charm
- Lady Colin Campbell believed that the Prince of Wales also received input from the people around him about Markle
- Reports claimed Prince Charles gave Markle the "Tungsten" moniker because he was impressed by her strength
There was allegedly more than one instance that led Prince Charles to nickname Meghan Markle "Tungsten," according to a royal expert.
Royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell, the author of several books about the British royal family, including "Meghan and Harry: The Real Story," answered some royal fans' inquiries in a Q&A with her followers on her YouTube channel. One fan asked what brought the Prince of Wales to give the Duchess of Sussex the nickname "Tungsten." The netizen asked Campbell's thoughts if there was an event that led Prince Charles to call Prince Harry's wife that way.
"Well, I was actually told when I was writing the book that it wasn't just one event. It was the feeling that she was so brutal and harsh underneath the charm. She was very charming, initially," Princess Diana's biographer claimed. "But it was the smile of a barracuda [and] the toughness of tungsten."
The royal pundit added that the former "Suits" star managed to keep Prince Harry in line, but, for her, it was not an accomplishment. In her understanding, what led to the heir apparent giving his daughter-in-law such a nickname "wasn't just any one thing." It took more than one incident to read a character. She also believed Prince Charles may have received input from his wife, eldest son and daughter-in-law.
However, according to a previous report from Daily Mail, "Tungsten," a type of metal known for being "tough and bending," was an endearment for the Duchess of Sussex because the Prince of Wales was impressed with her strength.
Prince Charles and Markle had a great relationship. The actress had been estranged from her own father and encouraged Prince Harry to build bridges with her dad, a source told The Sunday Telegraph. The future king was even the one that gave her away when her dad, Thomas Markle Sr., canceled his attendance at her 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry.
The Markle patriarch was happy that Prince Charles stepped in for him. According to Thomas Sr., he couldn't think of a "better replacement" than Prince Harry's father.
"He looked very handsome, and my daughter looked beautiful with him," he said in an interview with "Good Morning Britain." "I was jealous, I wish I'd been there, I wish it'd been me, but thank God he was there."
There are rumors that the Sussexes are at odds with the royal family. They did not interact with the senior members of the royal family at the St. Paul Cathedral during the National Service of Thanksgiving in honor of the Queen. But Prince Harry and Markle's kids Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, met their great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth and grandfather Prince Charles.
