Prince Harry and the Invictus Games Foundation canceled the upcoming Invictus Games due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Duke of Sussex decided to push back the Paralympic-style competition for wounded veterans and servicemen that was due to take place in May in The Hague, Netherlands. Meghan Markle’s husband released a video to explain their decision.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision for all of us to have to make,” Prince Harry said.
“And I’m so grateful for everybody that’s worked so hard over the past couple of weeks to try to find any alternative to try and carry on these Games in a different way — in a safe way. But this decision was the most sensible and the safest option for all of you — for your families and everybody else — involved in these Games.”
To lighten up the announcement, Prince Harry said that the move will give athletes an extra 12 months or so to prepare, so they can be fitter and ready for the competition. In this way, the competitors can be at their best shape physically and mentally.
The Invictus Games Foundation also released a statement about the matter. The organization acknowledged the fact that delaying the event is disappointing news to all involved in the planning and delivery of the games. But they are now setting their sights on Invictus Games 2021.
“We are very appreciative of the continued support of those who have been and continue to be involved in the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, and we remain committed to the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women,” the Invictus Games Foundation wrote.
“The current situation is complex and evolving rapidly. The current situation is complex and evolving rapidly.”
The foundation added that the tickets will be refunded and ticket holders will be contacted in due course.
Meanwhile, several netizens commented on Prince Harry’s look in the video. According to some Twitter users, he looked like he was in a hostage situation. One user kept his comment short by writing “hostage video” with laughing emoji.
“Why does he always look like he's in a hostage situation? Always nondescript background,” another user commented.
