Prince Philip made a romantic gesture to Queen Elizabeth II following Prince Charles’ birth.

The Duke of Edinburgh reportedly did something peculiar when Queen Elizabeth II was in labor. He reportedly played squash and even went for a swim. His footman had to tell him to hurry after his child was born.

“When the Princess came around from her anaesthetic, the Duke of Edinburgh was there with a bottle of champagne and a large bouquet of red roses and carnations, the Queen’s favourite flowers, that his equerry had the foresight to buy earlier,” Daily Mail journalist Steve Bird said.

London also celebrated Prince Charles’ birth with the bells at Westminster Abbey ringing out and a 41-gun salute fired by the King’s Troop Royal Artillery. In Trafalgar Square, the fountains were lit blue and outside Buckingham Palace, around 4,000 people gathered to watch the medical team arrive and leave.

The Prince of Wales was also the first royal baby to have a senior political official in attendance. However, this practice has already been stopped by the Queen’s father.

Prince Philip was not present on Princess Anne and Prince Andrew’s birth, too. Men were initially excluded from labor. However, the Duke of Edinburgh was in the room when Queen Elizabeth II gave birth to Prince Edward.

“It was the first time he had been present at the birth of one of his children and he was there at the express invitation of his wife,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward said.

“The Queen was thirty-seven. She had not found giving birth easy, but sixteen years had passed since Charles was born and fashions had changed in the interim, even in matters as primary as obstetrics.”

Meanwhile, Prince Harry might follow what Prince Philip did for his last child. According to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, he is certain that the Duke of Sussex will be right by Meghan Markle’s side when she gives birth to their baby.

Prince Harry and Markle will surely be “hands-on” parents. However, they are still expected to get a nanny due to their busy calendar of royal engagements.
