Princess Diana coped with the pressures of royal life through destructive measures.

During her controversial interview with Martin Bashir for Panorama, the Princess of Wales explained why she decided to hurt herself. The mom of two made it clear that she acted up after feeling that no one gives her any attention.

“Mmm. When no one listens to you, or you feel no one’s listening to you, all sorts of things start to happen,” she said.

But the late royal made it clear that she didn’t hurt herself because she was seeking the public or even Prince Charles’ attention. Rather, she resorted to such extreme measures because she needed help.

“I did inflict upon myself. I didn’t like myself, I was ashamed because I couldn’t cope with the pressures. Well, I just hurt my arms and my legs; and I work in environments now where I see women doing similar things and I’m able to understand completely where they’re coming from,” she said.

Meanwhile, there was one instance wherein Princess Diana shocked Queen Elizabeth II when she threw herself down the stairs while pregnant with Prince William.

In the book “Diana: Her True Story,” royal author Andrew Morton shared details from her conversation with the Princess of Wales. The latter said that she threw herself down the stairs while 4 months pregnant to get Prince Charles’ attention. But by the looks of it, she didn’t succeed.

“I had told Charles I felt so desperate and I was crying my eyes out. He said I was crying wolf. ‘I’m not going to listen,’ he said. ‘You’re always doing this to me. I’m going riding now.’ So I threw myself down the stairs. The Queen comes out, absolutely horrified, shaking — she was so frightened,” she said.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage only became worse from that point on. The couple tied the knot in 1981, but they divorced in 1996.
