Princess Diana Could Have Lost These If She Remarried After Prince Charles
Princess Diana would have lost more if she married again.
The late Princess of Diana received an impressive divorce settlement from Prince Charles. However, according to Ashley Lewis of Reader's Digest, while it included a lot of sweet perks, the offer was only good as long as she remained single.
The future king and the People's Princess' divorce was finalized in August 1996. Princess Diana wasn't stripped of her entire fortune and status. Under their divorce agreement, the exes share parental custody with Prince Charles raising their two sons Prince William and Prince Charles.
Princess Diana had full access to the royal family's jet and could keep her Kensington Palace apartment as long as the Queen agreed. She could also keep the jewelry she obtained during her marriage. The London newspaper also claimed that she would get $600,000 annually for her new private offices in Kensington Palace and another $22.5 million in cash.
The publication noted that there's a catch in their agreement and it involves Princess Diana's marital status. She would have to relinquish her divorce settlement benefits if she were to remarry. So, she could have lost the financing, her Kensington Palace home and more.
According to Geoffrey Bignell, Prince Charles' former financial aid, the divorce caused the heir a lot. In fact, Prince Charles had to sell his entire investment portfolio just to fund their messy split. The entire process made the first-in-line to the throne unhappy.
"Princess Diana took every penny he had," Bignell told The Telegraph. "I was told to liquidate everything, all his investments so that he could give her the cash. He was very unhappy about that. That's when I stopped being his personal financial adviser because he had no personal wealth left. She took him to the cleaners."
According to Prince Charles' friends, Prince William and Prince Harry's mom made "excessive" demands. They knew that their separation would affect Prince Charles financially, but they couldn't do something about it as it was the Queen who advised them to part ways.
Princess Diana's wealth was inherited by the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex. She also specifically stated that she wanted her jewelry to be equally divided to her sons, so their wives can use it. Meghan Markle was recently spotted using Princess Diana's butterfly earrings.
