Princess Diana reportedly decided she wanted to marry Prince Charles right after they met each other for the first time.

In 1977, the Princess of Wales returned home from boarding school when she chanced upon Prince Charles in Althorp for a shoot. Royal biographer Andrew Morton revealed that then-16-year-old Princess Diana was amazed by the attention she got from the future king.

Morton revealed Princess Diana’s real reaction upon seeing Prince Charles in his book in “Diana: In Her Own Words.”

“She said later, ‘I kept out of the way. I remember being a fat, podgy, no make-up, unsmart lady but I made a lot of noise and he liked that and he came up to me after dinner and we had a big dance… for someone like that to show you any attention – I was just sort of amazed,’” he wrote.

Princess Diana reportedly couldn’t believe how someone of Prince Charles’ status would be interested in getting to know someone like her, the author claimed. According to Morton, this amazement resulted in the mom of two dreaming of one day marrying Prince Charles.

Three years later, Princess Diana and Prince Charles reunited, and they actually became a couple. According to Morton, Princess Diana managed to strike a deep chord in Prince Charles when she discussed the death of Lord Mountbatten in 1969. At that time, Prince Charles was also being pressured to settle down because he was already in his 30s.

Unfortunately, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship didn’t last. Royal author Katie Nicholl said in the book “Harry: Life, Loss, and Love” that Prince Harry’s parents desperately wanted him to repair their marriage.

When Princess Diana became pregnant with Prince Harry, she and Prince Charles thought that the newest addition to their family could repair their marriage. Unfortunately, it didn’t. The Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation 11 years after tying the knot. Their divorce was finalized in 1996.
