Princess Diana reportedly made a huge sacrifice for the monarchy because she did not want to disappoint Queen Elizabeth II.
The Prince and Princess of Wales had an unhappy marriage. According to royal experts, Prince Charles has always loved Camilla Parker Bowles and would have married her, but the royal family disapproved of the Duchess of Cornwall.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton shared that Princess Diana was already very unhappy with her union with the heir apparent. However, she still didn’t leave him because she didn’t want to let Her Majesty down.
“While Diana finds the monarchy as presently organised as a crumbling institution she has a deep respect for the manner in which the queen has conducted herself for the last forty years,” Morton wrote in her book “Diana: Her True Story.”
“Indeed, much as she would like to leave her husband, Diana has emphasised to her: ‘I will never let you down.’”
However, the process wasn’t easy for Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom. In fact, she sought help from the Queen in her last attempt to save their marriage.
However, the monarch wasn’t very sympathetic with her. According to Princess Diana, the Queen told her she didn’t know what to do with the couple.
“So I went to the top lady [Queen Elizabeth II], sobbing,” Princess Diana said. “And I said ‘What do I do? I am coming to you, what do I do?’ And she said, ‘I don’t know what you should do.’ And that was it. And that was help.”
According to Princess Diana’s friend and trainer Jenni Rivett, she didn’t want a divorce. The late royal was only forced to leave Prince Charles and it was reportedly Queen Elizabeth II’s decision.
Princess Diana received a letter from the monarch advising her and Prince Charles to get a divorce.
“I have consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury and with the prime minister and, of course, with Charles, and we have decided that the best course for you is divorce,” the Queen’s letter read.
According to Rivett, Princess Diana wanted to be the queen of people’s hearts. She wanted to be a good mom and good wife, too.
“Given the choice, she would have stayed and tried to make a happy marriage,” Rivett said.
