Here’s Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ relationship timeline before the future king confirmed his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Many believed that Prince Charles has always loved Camilla and that he never really loved Princess Diana but was only forced to marry her. Below is a timeline of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ relationship before Prince Charles got back with Camilla and divorced the People’s Princess.
1977
The Prince and Princess of Wales met in 1977 wen Prince Charles was dating Princess Diana’s older sister Lady Sarah Spencer. They dated for two years before calling it quits.
1980
Prince Charles and Princess Diana began to see each other in a new light in 1978. However, it wasn’t until 1980 when they started to officially date.
1981
On Feb. 24, 1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their engagement. The couple appeared on a televised interview where the heir apparent memorably said, “Whatever in love means,” when asked if he loves Princess Diana. According to a boy language expert, there were already signs that their relationship was doomed during their engagement announcement.
“When Prince Charles and Diana announced their engagement there were already signs that all was not well,” Dr. Peter Collett said. “We can see that they together, but they are not in step and Charles is not adapting his behaviour to include Diana.”
After a month, Prince Charles and Princess Diana stepped out together for their first event together. Princess Diana wore a blacks strapless gown.
On July 29, 1981 Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Princess Diana reportedly endured a shocking weight loss in the run-up to her big day.
“She did lose weight,” Elizabeth Emanuel, who worked on Princess Diana’s gown, said. “She was losing so much we even had to start again a couple of times. Her waist was a size 23 at the end, she was tiny like a model.”
1982
Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially became parents after welcoming Prince William. After two years, the Prince and Princess of Wales became parents for the second time with Prince Harry’s arrival.
1986
Prince Charles reportedly began seeing Camilla again. They dated before, but the royal family didn’t approve of the Duchess of Cornwall for the future king because she wasn’t aristocratic enough and she was deemed a woman with experience.
1992
Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their separation.
1994
In June of 1994, Prince Charles admitted his affair with Camilla during a TV interview. The future king said he tried to be faithful until his relationship with Princess Diana became “irretrievably broken down.”
1996
Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce was finalized.
