Queen Elizabeth II reportedly loaned Princess Diana the Lover’s Knot tiara for her wedding day, but the late royal refused to wear it due to practical reasons.

Prince Charles’ ex-wife opted to wear the Spencer tiara, which was her family’s heirloom, when she wed the future king at St. Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981. Deborah Papas of Posh Pawn told Express that Her Majesty hoped Princess Diana would agree to wear her headpiece.

“The piece was made by Garrards in 1914 for Queen Mary who designed it and left it in her will to Her Majesty, the Queen,” she said.

According to Papas, Princess Diana most likely refused the offer because she knew that the Lover Knot’s tiara was heavy and could cause her headache, but it is still one of her favorites.

The headpiece was returned to the Queen’s collection shortly after the Princess of Wales passed away on Aug. 31, 1997. Years later, the monarch had the top row of pearls removed and wore it frequently.

Middleton was the most recent royal that wore the Lover’s Knot tiara, and she was first seen in it in 2016.

“It looks as stunning on Kate as it did on all the royals that wore it. One of my favorite quotes is from Keats: ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever…’ This is certainly true of this magnificent tiara,” she said.

In related news, Middleton is expected to wear a crown when she is named as Queen Consort in the coming years. The crown is the one that was worn by the Queen Mother and is currently on display at the Tower of London’s Crown Jewels exhibition.

If the report will be proven to be true, Middleton’s upcoming coronation could be faced with a major controversy. In the past, the Indian government has asked the royal family to return the crown to the country. At present, the crown is still in Britain.
