Princess Diana had been married to Prince Charles for 15 years before they decided to get a divorce. Shortly after, the Princess of Wales started dating non-royal men.
While speaking with People, royal commentator Emma Forbes claimed that Princess Diana felt like a teenager again when she started dating Dr. Hasnat Khan. The former couple lived very normal lives that Princess Diana didn’t experience while she was with Prince Charles.
“There was really a sort of teenager feel to it. There would be cigarettes leftover, Kentucky Fried Chicken packets – you’d never imagine Princess Diana having take out or doing those kings of teenager-in-love things. But I think he came at a point in her life when she relished having her normality back. Because she got married so young, she never really had that real teenager's heady feeling of being in love,” she said.
Princess Diana and Khan first met when the late royal visited her friend at the Royal Brompton Hospital and who was being treated by Khan. According to Forbes, Khan treated Princess Diana like an ordinary person, and he didn’t gush over her royal status.
“I think that must have made him infinitely, like to any woman, more appealing. Of course, to Princess Diana, that had never happened where somebody didn’t instantly go, ‘oh my goodness, you are Princess Diana.’ Who doesn’t love a surgeon who’s that handsome, like he’s of some TV soap, performing open-heart surgery and you go watch him, and he’s doing heroic things,” the royal commentator said.
Princess Diana also made headlines this week after her photo at the Taj Mahal in 1992 was revisited. Royal photographer Andrew Edwards said that he wasn’t convinced Prince Charles rejected Princess Diana at that time even though he didn’t show up for their photo op.
According to Edwards, it is true that Prince Charles had a previous engagement scheduled on the day of Princess Diana’s trip to India so he didn’t technically snub his ex-wife.
