The past year has been a tough time for Meghan Markle following her marriage to Prince Harry. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been under harsh criticism over decisions that deviated from royal traditions.

In October, a documentary about the couple’s trip to Africa aired and received mixed reviews from the public. In the television special, the royals spoke about their struggle to deal with criticism from tabloids. Meghan appeared to have an especially hard time dealing with the scrutiny.

However, Princess Marie of Denmark wasn’t sympathetic to Meghan’s predicament. Instead, she thought the former “Suits” star made a major mistake by sharing her struggles with the public.

During an interview with French magazine Paris Match, Marie was asked if she finds it “painful to live” under the royal spotlight, like “Meghan Markle has complained about it.” However, she revealed she couldn’t relate to the former actress’ struggles.

“I make sure to expose myself only when necessary. Complaining is useless,” she explained.

Like Meghan, Princess Marie married into the royal family. Before her marriage to Prince Joachim in 2008, she was an executive secretary in ING Numismatic Group SA. Although her life has changed since becoming a member of the Danish royal family, Marie insisted she has been able to protect her happiness.

“I think I’m still the same. I simply decline certain aspects of my personality depending on the situation.”

During Meghan and Prince Harry’s documentary, the 38-year-old revealed that the negative attention from the tabloid had taken an emotional toll on her life.

“I’ve said for a long time to H - that’s what I call him - it is not enough to just survive something, right? That’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive. You’ve got to feel happy, and I think I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried, I really tried,” she revealed.

For now, Meghan and Prince Harry are taking a step back from the spotlight, so they can enjoy the holidays abroad with baby Archie.
