Prodigy Dead At 42: Rap Industry Gives Tribute To Mobb Deep Rapper On Twitter

The music industry has lost another legend after Prodigy’s death at 42.

Millions of hip-hop fans are mourning after it was confirmed that Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy has passed away. The musician had a significant influence on the development of hip-hop, which is why a number of prominent names in the industry immediately gave tribute to him on Twitter.

“Damn. RiP to the great one Prodigy. Rap game lost a legend the world lost a G. to and for his fam. Love. MOBB,” Lil Wayne wrote on Twitter. “R.I.P. to the man with the most fitting name in the art...cause he was one. Prodigy gave us some of the illest most meaningful lines ever,” KA, another American rapper and producer, wrote on his Twitter.

Others gave tribute to Prodigy by playing Mobb Deep’s “The Start of Your Ending,” while some remembered him for his previous works and interest. According to Andrew Barber, Prodigy was the first rap blogger. He also shared a screenshot of one of the rapper’s articles. Meanwhile, NYC Parks mourned the passing of the hip-hop icon by sharing a photo showing a view from the Queensbridge.

Prodigy, whose real name is Albert Johnson, died in Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 20. The reason for his death is still unknown, Mobb Deep’s publicist confirmed to XXL. “It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep,” the statement said. “Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”

According to TMZ, multiple sources confirmed that Prodigy had choked on an egg on Tuesday morning in the hospital. However, it remains unclear if the choking alone was the cause of death because the rapper was battling sickle cell symptoms as well.
