Queen Elizabeth Won’t Bypass Prince Charles, Make Prince William King Despite Rumors
Queen Elizabeth II won’t pass the crown directly to Prince William after she retires from her current post as the monarch.
According to the Daily Mail, rumors have been swirling that Prince Charles won’t be named king because of his age. After the Queen retires or dies, Prince William will automatically be named king because he is younger and more popular than his dad.
“The line of succession is governed by centuries-old rules, and the deeply traditional Queen has no intention of altering it,” the writer stated.
And even if the Queen wanted Prince William to follow in her footsteps, she cannot just alter the ruling and has no power to do so. On the royal family’s website, it has been explained that the succession to the throne is not only regulated through descent, but also by Parliamentary statute.
In order to change the order of succession, the royal family would need to get the approval of lawmakers in Britain and 15 other countries with the British monarch is head of state. This includes Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, and more.
According to People, it is also important to note that Prince William may not want to be king anytime soon. During an interview, Prince Harry allegedly said that no one wants the throne. Prince Charles also previously declared that he wants his eldest son to have a chance at a normal family life before he takes on more responsibilities on behalf of the royal family.
Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, told the publication, “[Prince Charles] wants his son to have the chance of a family life before he takes up the burden of kingship – a King has no family life as it is so restricting. William doesn’t want to be king before his father, no way.”
“It’s not a job like being a truck driver. We have an inherited monarchy and it passes from generation to generation and you have no choice in the matter,” she added.
