KEY POINTS

  • The Red Sox are considering Dansby Swanson
  • The Braves and Dodgers are keeping a close eye on the situation as well
  • Swanson is likely to get a lower deal compared to what other stars got in free agency

The MLB free agent market is slowly dwindling, but there remain some huge names that have yet to secure a deal for the 2023-24 MLB season.

One of the often-mentioned names is Dansby Swanson as the 28-year-old shortstop continues to weigh in on offers with multiple MLB teams expressing interest in his services.

It appears the teams are growing with the Boston Red Sox allegedly the latest team to join the race for the rights to the All-Star, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

This means that the Red Sox will be joining the mix of MLB teams interested in Swanson. That includes the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves.

However, it seems that the case of Swanson has now become a chess match with suggestions that these teams are closely monitoring the situation of the 2022 Golden Glove Award winner.

Heyman suggested that the Dodgers are on the "periphery," while the Braves are being cautious.

Seeing Swanson move to another MLB team would be a first considering he has spent his last seven seasons with the Braves.

Last season, the 2021 World Series Champion had a career year, hitting .277/.329/.447 (115 OPS+) with 32 doubles, 25 home runs, 96 RBI, 99 runs, 18 stolen bases, and 5.7 WAR.

Without a doubt, there is no question that Swanson would be a huge addition to help the offense of any MLB franchise.

However, the real asset that he brings is his defense at the shortstop position.

While the level of interest in the Red Sox remains sketchy, it will be interesting if Boston will make an aggressive push.

With the likes of Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts and Carlos Correa getting gigantic deals with other clubs, the wait right now is how much and where Swanson may end up.

Seeing how Carlos Correa ($350 million, San Francisco Giants), Trea Turner ($300 million, Philadelphia Phillies) and Xander Bogaerts ($280 million, San Diego Padres) had their hefty deals, Swanson may not be getting the same.

Swanson lacks the Top Five MVP finishes and the raw power and speed that the aforementioned players possess, but he produced a career-best 5.7 WAR last season and has hit 25 and 27 homers the past two seasons.
