‘Rocket League’ For Nintendo Switch Frame Rate, Resolution, Features & More Revealed
Psyonix has divulged more information about the “Rocket League” game that’s coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year.
“Rocket League” is scheduled for release later this year for the Nintendo Switch. For players and fans who are wondering what this new version of the popular vehicular soccer video game has to offer, developer Psyonix has revealed a lot of new information about it early this week.
Frame Rate & Resolution
Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham spoke with IGN this Monday and revealed the frame rate and display resolution of the new “Rocket League.” “Performance was what mattered most to us, so we aim to make sure that the game runs at 60 fps docked and undocked,” Dunham said. The developer has also claimed that they are aiming for 60 fps even when in splitscreen. As for the game’s resolution, players should expect it to run at its native resolution of 720p because Psyonix wants consistency in the performance of the different versions for the different gaming consoles.
Features
“Rocket League” for the Nintendo Switch will pretty much be the same as the versions for the Xbox One and Steam. It will come with the same features as the latter, so fans will get to enjoy the same Season mode, Drop Shot, Hoops, Snowday and Rumble features as the other versions. This makes sense considering that Psyonix is designing the new game to be cross-network compatible with Steam and Xbox One.
Multiplayer
“Rocket League” is best played in groups. Psyonix has decided to take advantage of the Nintendo Switch’s portability, so it designed the new version to support local multiplayer with up to eight Switches. Meanwhile, the game supports four players when docked and in splitscreen mode. When undocked, only two players can enjoy the tournament. Dunham said, “We don’t think people want to squint that much to see four players on an undocked system.”
Inspiration
Dunham and game producer Bobby Garza have revealed that the inspiration in bringing “Rocket League” to the Switch is none other than “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.” “The fact that they’re getting 60 fps docked and undocked, even in splitscreen [with two players in ‘Mario Kart 8’] is a huge thing for us,” Garza said. “And then how seamless the multiplayer experience is. Their lobby system isn’t as complex as ours, but it’s so easy to use.” Garza also admitted that “Mario Kart 8” influenced them to bring local multiplayer to the upcoming game.
Compared to “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” though, “Rocket League” isn’t capable of running at 1080p resolution when docked. As mentioned earlier, the game only runs at 720p. Comicbook says this is pretty disappointing knowing that Psyonix’s game isn’t really a graphical powerhouse.
Other Details
Psyonix has not revealed whether there will be new features in the game or not. However, Dunham mentioned that they are still exploring the special features of the Switch, such as motion control and HD rumble. In due time, Dunham will update fans about the result of this move.
Release Date
“Rocket League” for the Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release this holiday season. Psyonix has yet to reveal the specific date.
