Alas, witches will no longer walk in Salem.

WGN America has decided to cancel “Salem.” Season 3 will be the series’ last, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The spell-binding drama is currently airing its third season. WGN has already aired five episodes of Season 3. Hence, only five more episodes are left to air. The Season 3 finale, which will now serve as the series finale, is scheduled to premiere on Jan. 18, 2017.

Produced by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, “Salem” is set in the 17th century and explores Salem’s infamous witch trials. The show stars “This Is Us” actress Janet Montgomery as Mary Sibley, Shane West as Captain John Alden, Seth Gabel as Cotton Mather, Tamzin Merchant as Anne Hale, Ashley Madekwe as Tituba and Elise Eberle as Mercy Lewis.

While this is disappointing news to many fans of “Salem,” they can at least be comforted by the fact that the creators crafted the season finale to be a series finale. “We knew this would be the third and final season and were able to craft an exciting climax to Mary’s transformational saga,” Simon and Braga said in a statement, “It was a magical experience to create ‘Salem’ and we want to thank every producer, writer, director, actor and crew member for all they have done to help us bring the world of ‘Salem’ to life.”

Although the WGN America series enjoys a loyal fan following, viewer ratings were steadily declining since the series premiered. In 2014, “Salem” premiered to an audience of 1.5 million viewers. In contrast, the show now averages only 200,000 to 300,000 viewers per episode, according to TVLine.

Braga reacted to the cancelation news and told fans on Twitter that the final episodes are “killer.”

Meanwhile, West took to Twitter to console upset fans.
