Sarah Ferguson Working On 3 Young Adult Books Inspired By Personal Experiences

Sarah Ferguson is working on a new genre of books and will be targetting a new market.

The Duchess of York has written several children's books. But this time, she is working on books for young adults inspired by her personal experiences.

Ferguson has signed a new 22-book deal with Australian publisher Serenity Press, and it includes three young adult novels.

"Young adults are perhaps the fastest-growing category of new fiction today. There's just something about adolescence — with all its incredible triumphs and heartbreaking failures— that makes it the perfect backdrop for powerful storytelling," Ferguson said in a statement obtained by People.

Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice's mom said she would channel the painful experiences she had during her teenage years in the books, including her struggles with her mental health and eating disorders.

"I wanted to share my story of growing up with anxiety and an eating disorder, along with witnessing firsthand the effects of generational trauma. For me, it is always present, and it all started at the loss of my mother," Ferguson added.

Ferguson's mom, Susan Barrantes, died in 1998. The Duchess of York said she turned for comfort when she was grieving her mother's passing.

Ferguson has shared some details about her weight and mental health problems in her book "Her Heart For A Compass" and during her guest appearance on "Loose Women." She also spoke about it when she appeared on Dr. Vijay Murthy's podcast.

"I was a binge eater," Ferguson confessed. "I could never get bulimia because I just didn't have that mental state to go that far, but I always wished I could."

She continued, "That just shows you how dangerous and what place I got to. To wish you could have a mental illness to that level is a very serious place to get to."

Due to her eating habit, she gained more weight. Ferguson added that she also compared herself to her then-sister-in-law Princess Diana and wished she was as "beautiful and thin."

Ferguson's co-author, Michelle Worthington, praised the royal for her "warmth" and "professionalism." She added that she enjoyed their brainstorming and writing sessions.

"She went out of her way to articulate and clarify exactly what messages she wanted to share in the series based on her personal experiences and took the time to listen to mine," Worthington said of the duchess. "Her personalized approach challenged me to improve the manuscript and become the best support I could be to her vision. This series is a testament to her courage."

Ferguson's first young adult book "Demon's Land" will hit the shelves at the end of June.
