'Scream' Star Reveals Knife 'Flew Out' Of Ghostface Actor's Hand: 'Stunt Guy Was Mortified'
Melissa Barrera, who starred in the fifth installment of the "Scream" franchise, has revealed she almost got stabbed on the set when a real knife "flew out" of Ghostface actor's hand. The incident left the stuntman "mortified," according to the actress.
"So we were doing a part of that sequence where I was on one side of a round table and he was on the other, doing stabs across the table to try and reach me," the 31-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.
Barrera shared that during one of the stabbing scenes, the knife "flew out" of the actor's hand and "hit the window" right behind her. She also noted that the knife was real and everyone on the set "freaked out."
"Luckily, it went a little off to the side, away from me," she explained. "But from then on, they had to glue the knife to the glove so that it didn't happen anymore. But poor Keith [Ward], our stunt guy, was mortified."
The actress said everyone on the set acknowledged how things went really wrong. She also emphasized that it was her first time working on a scene with the Ghostface actor.
"I felt so bad for him. I was like, 'I'm fine!' And they were like, 'Yeah, but it could've gone really, really wrong. Imagine if you would've gotten stabbed with a flying knife!' So that was my first experience with Ghostface," she recalled.
Barrera also had a lot of good things to say about the "incredible environment" she got to be in while working on the film, and she praised directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, as well as the late director Wes Craven, for it.
According to the actress, it was the same environment that kept the original cast members, including Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell, coming back to the franchise.
"The environment that Wes created kept Courteney, David and Neve coming back, and I think Matt and Tyler have done their best to try and replicate that experience for everyone. They've done a really good job," she said.
"Scream" hit the theaters on Jan. 14. Created with a budget of $24 million, the film has so far earned $55.4 million worldwide.
