'Sea Of Thieves': How To Find And Fight A Kraken
KEY POINTS
- Krakens only spawn when no other world events are active
- Be extra careful when sailing after clearing a world event
- Krakens drop loot based on the number of tentacles destroyed in the encounter
The Kraken is a gigantic sea creature that players can sometimes encounter in “Sea of Thieves,” thrashing anything that’s unlucky enough to be nearby.
Much like Megalodon encounters, Kraken attacks are fairly rare. However, it is also very rewarding should a crew be able to fend it off without sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Daring pirates who want to find a Kraken in “Sea of Thieves” will have to rely on plenty of luck, though.
Krakens will only spawn if there are no events going on in the world. This means the skies should be free from any odd formations like skull clouds and tornados. Of course, there’s no real way for crews to control this apart from finishing the events themselves.
When no events are active, there is a chance that a Kraken will spawn directly under a ship. A musical cue will play, and dark ink will appear beneath a ship, slowing it down to a snail’s pace. Shortly after these signs manifest, massive tentacles will appear and begin attacking the ship.
The Sunken Pearl Tall Tale will have players fight a Kraken as part of its story.
Fighting a Kraken in “Sea of Thieves”
Krakens attack by trapping players in their tentacles or by assaulting ships directly. Players can escape from a Kraken’s clutches by attacking tentacle mouths or by having crewmates harpoon them to safety.
Cannonballs can deal the most DPS against tentacles. Normal weapons can still deal damage, but they are too weak to be used as a main damage source. Only use them when trapped or when cannon angles are unavailable.
Should players run out of cannonballs, Blunderbombs and Firebombs can work as great alternatives. Make sure that each shot hits, especially when sailing on a galleon.
While Krakens cannot be killed per se, they will retreat when enough tentacles are taken down. The number of tentacle kills needed to make a Kraken go away depends on ship size.
Players will gain rewards based on the number of tentacles defeated. Much like Megalodons and Skeleton Ships, Krakens will drop virtually anything, from treasure chests to bounty skulls and mermaid gems.
