Selena Gomez Taught Steve Martin, Martin Short Gen Z Slangs, 'WAP' Lyrics: 'I Started Dying Laughing'
Selena Gomez seems to be having a blast with her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short. She recently had to explain to the septuagenarians the meaning of some of the pop-culture references and short forms used by Generation Z.
In her latest interview, Gomez, 29, recalled telling Martin and Short the meaning of OG. "There was a line in the script that said, 'She's an OG.' And Steve walked up and said, 'Can somebody tell me what OG means?'" Gomez told Elle on Thursday. "I started dying laughing."
The singer went on to praise both the senior co-stars and noted, "I got to be in a space with so much wisdom. They became my uncles."
Besides "OG," the singer also taught them the lyrics of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's hit song "WAP." In another interview, Short disclosed how he first met Gomez and how she helped Martin to understand "WAP" lyrics.
"She was in the makeup chair…and right away I could tell within five minutes she was fabulous, funny, loose and wanted the set to be the way we all ideally wanted," Short told ET.
"And I think every time the three of us went back to our little holding area, and read the news from each other's phones and laughed, and, you know, she told Steve lyrics to 'W.A.P.,'" Short said, before Gomez interrupted, "Why did you say W.A.P? It's WAP."
Gomez further noted that she "certainly did" explained to them the NSFW word. Short asked, "Why can't you say W.A.P?" to which Martin replied, "Cause that's not what they say."
"That's not what the kids say," Gomez also agreed. When Martin was asked what he thought about "WAP" after learning the full form, he joked, "Known it for years."
Gomez, Martin and Short have collaborated for an upcoming Hulu series, titled "Only Murders in the Building," which is slated to release on Aug. 31. The crime comedy will consist of 10 episodes, which will revolve around three strangers who try to solve a murder mystery.
This series will mark Gomez's return to the television since she worked in Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place," which ran between 2007 and 2012.
