Is ‘Sense8’ Canceled After Season 2? Star Brian J. Smith Responds To Premature Rumors

“Sense8” Season 2 hasn’t even hit the airwaves, but cancellation rumors are already circulating. Brian J. Smith, who plays Chicago cop Will, said that no decisions have been made regarding the show’s future.

“That all rests with Netflix and also the fans, too,” the actor told Digital Spy. “If they like what happens, and they like what they see in Season 2, we’ll hear about it.”

Smith, however, hopes that Netflix and the audience enjoy the second season of the drama, which follows a group of psychically linked people. It sounds like the May episodes won’t exactly wrap up the story. “I think we’ll all know whether or not we should do a third season. I hope we do. I can say there’s definitely more story to tell after Season 2. We’re not done with it and I hope we get to finish it, I really do,” he added.

“Sense8” has had its challenges. It didn’t seem to dominate the pop culture conversation the way other hits like “Orange is the New Black” and “Stranger Things” have. It also had some behind-the-scenes shake-ups between seasons. Leading character Capheus was recast. Aml Ameen was replaced with Toby Onwumere after creative differences with “Sense8” team. Lilly Wachowski, one of the showrunners, decided to step down after publically coming out as transgender.

“I think Lilly needed to be private for a while and really become herself — and so Lana [Wachowski] wrote this whole season pretty much on her own. And she directed pretty much every single frame of the show, with a few exceptions, when her father was ill,” Smith revealed.

The Wachowski sisters have also included a trans character in the drama, Nomi (Jamie Clayton). That’s likely just one of the reasons that Clayton hopes the series lives on. At a Netflix event Wednesday, the actress said that “Sense8” was one of many shows on the streaming giant telling giving voices to people who haven’t often seen themselves in characters on TV. “We’re not telling watered down stories. Everyone needs to feel like they belong, to be represented,” Clayton said.

There likely won’t be answers about the future of “Sense8” until after Season 2 hits the streaming platform. Netflix is set to release 10 new episodes on May 5.
