Is Sex Addiction Real In The DSM? Scott Disick Sneaks Girl On Kourtney Kardashian Trip
“Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star Scott Disick tried to defend himself against his pseudo in-laws by claiming he was a sex addict on Sunday night’s edition of the E! reality show. The father-of-three angered the Kardashian family when he snuck a girl on their family vacation to Costa Rica.
Matriarch Kris Jenner, 61, confronted Disick at dinner. “I think what we’re wondering is if you have a girl here and why?” she asked.
When he tried to say he was “trying to move on” from ex-girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian, Jenner interjected.

“On a family vacation, don’t you think it’s inappropriate and disrespectful?” she said. “To me, to your kids and to all my family? There’s a level of respect and appropriateness that should just be known, but apparently it’s not.”
Disick, 33, argued he “did something wrong — as always,” but Kardashian snapped at him. “Stop playing the victim,” she said. “You had your chance. I thought we were spending our whole lives together, and I’ve done everything I can.”
That’s when the troubled father claimed to be addicted to sex. “I’m a sex addict,” he told Kris, Kourtney, Kim and Khloé. “I’m a f---ed up, horrible sex addict.”
But Khloé, 32, didn’t care. “If you need to get your d--- wet that badly, then get your f---ing d— wet,” she said, throwing water on him and leaving the table. Kris and Kim also dumped their drinks on him and walked away.
Disick later admitted he only said he was a sex addict because it was the first thing that came to his mind, but can a person really be addicted to sex? The short answer is no.
“Sex addiction is not a scientifically research-based valid diagnostic clinical category,” New York City sex therapist Ian Kerner told Yahoo Beauty Monday. While the therapist treats clients who identify as sex addicts, it’s not recognized by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5, also known as the DSM.
Kerner wasn’t alone in saying sex addiction isn’t real. “Sex addiction has been rejected as a diagnosis repeatedly over the past 40 years, due to lack of scientific support for it,” David J. Ley, an Albuquerque-based clinical psychologist who specializes in sexuality, told Yahoo Beauty. “Of great concern is the evidence that this concept pathologizes healthy sexual behavior, based on arbitrary, subjective definitions of ‘how much sex is too much?’”
If a person exhibits sexual behavior that is out of the ordinary, it’s likely a symptom of an underlying problem. Therefore, it’s important to treat the issue not the symptom.
Whether or not Disick is addicted to sex, Kourtney doesn’t want to maintain a romantic relationship with her ex. “After everything that’s happened here in Costa Rica, Scott knows that it’s done,” Kourtney said. “But just saying those words lets both of us move on. It’s done.”
“Scott’s so lucky, because I am the coolest baby mama on the planet,” she added. “The stuff that he’s done and I still allow him to come on our family trips? … I just feel like I need to have a conversation with him just to finally say we will never be back together. It’s probably better for both of us.”
