Shawn Mendes is getting candid about his current relationship with social media while thanking fans for supporting his latest single "It'll Be Okay."
Mendes, 23, dropped his latest breakup ballad just weeks after splitting from his girlfriend Camila Cabello, 24.
In a video he uploaded on Instagram Thursday, he expressed his gratitude to fans for connecting with "It'll Be Okay" and posting videos about it on social media.
"I'm having a little bit of a hard time with social media at the moment, just kind of my relationship with it, but I have lots of people sending me videos and telling me what's going on," Mendes said in the nearly two-minute clip posted to his page.
The Canadian singer-songwriter went on to share his ultimate goal when making music, which is to "have some sort of my own truth revealed to me."
"A lot of the times when I'm writing songs, I'm usually using music as a platform to be able to get to a place inside of myself that I wouldn't be able to get to by just kind of talking to people or thinking about it," Mendes explained of his songwriting process.
He also shared his reaction to fans crying and getting emotional over the new breakup anthem, adding, "I hope that's because there's some truth in the song ['It'll Be Okay'], and there lies honestly in it."
Mendes said that he was "proud" of the song and that he feels grateful that fans are being "vulnerable" and "just having fun with it."
He then explained that he uploaded the Instagram message to let his fans know that he loves and appreciates them. "I see you guys and I see how much love you’re giving this song and giving me and that means the world to me. So thank you, I love you guys," he concluded.
Mendes and Cabello dated for two and a half years before they parted ways in late November.
In a joint statement posted to their respective Instagram Stories at the time, the exes wrote that they will "continue to be best friends" despite ending their romantic relationship.
"We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward," the pair wrote.
An unnamed source told E! News that the former Fifth Harmony singer was "very upset" when Mendes "initiated the conversation" about breaking up, but she later agreed that it was for the best.
Although they are no longer dating, the insider confirmed that Mendes and Cabello are "still in communication and want to be friends." The source added that it "was not a bad breakup at all."
