Should Danelle Umstead Have Been Eliminated From ‘Dancing With the Stars?’
After two nights of competition, week 2 of “Dancing With the Stars” saw another team say goodbye following an elimination. However, a reveal during the broadcast of a glitch with voting the night before has some wondering if the show should have gone through with the original plans.
Blind Paralympian Danelle Umstead and partner Artem Chigvintsev were the second couple to see themselves eliminated from Season 27 of the ABC competition series. Prior to the announcement that the elimination was between them and actor John Schneider and his partner, Emma Slater, host Tom Bergeron announced that there had been a glitch with votes cast by phone from the night before, meaning that only votes cast online were counting when it came to who fans wanted to keep in the competition.
According to ET, other members of the show’s cast were stunned by the news backstage.
“I was shocked,” Schneider said after learning he wasn’t being eliminated. “My reaction was, ‘Oh no!’ because I think that our audience are primarily phone voters, and I put a lot of effort in yesterday, both of us did, like, ‘Hey guys, vote for us,’ hoping that they would and knowing that that didn’t count, that really shook the ground for me.”
Fans of the pair have also expressed anger over the elimination on social media, stating that it was unfair for the show to go through with it after an unknown number of votes wound up not being counted because of the glitch.
“It’s not fair. You shouldn’t have been eliminated,” one fan commented on Artem’s post about appearing on “GMA” following the elimination. “The phone votes were glitching so they didn’t count them.”
In a reply to GMA’s tweet about the couple appearing on the show, another fan expressed outrage over the elimination and threatened to no longer watch “DWTS” as a result.
“People are outraged that they eliminated this couple when the phone votes were not counted. Her story would have been so special next week. I’ll watch something else now,” the fan wrote.
It’s unclear if phone votes would have made a difference for the pair, as their scores from the judges were consistently lower than the ones some of their competitors have already received. They received only 18 points for their New York Night Cha Cha, doing better only than Joe Amabile and Jenna Johnson, who received 17 points for their Foxtrot.
However, it is worth noting that glitches with voting have led to the show canceling a planned elimination in the past. Back in Season 17, a glitch occurred in Week 6 with which phone numbers were revealed for each contestant. Eventual winner Amber Riley’s “Glee” co-star, Chris Colfer, called attention to the problem on Twitter, giving fans the correct call in number instead. However, the show opted to cancel the elimination as a result of the mix-up.
It’s unclear why the show opted not to go through with a cancellation this time around.
“Dancing With the Stars” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
