Simu Liu Says His Path Differs From Jackie Chan, Let Li And Bruce Lee's
Simu Liu, who recently appeared in the Marvel movie "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," has explained his path is different from those of other Asian actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Bruce Lee and opened up about his desire to "challenge" fans' perception of him with a "completely different" role in an upcoming film.
The 32-year-old actor, who is currently filming the rom-com movie "One True Loves," told The Hollywood Reporter why he chose a light-hearted movie after doing an action-filled one.
"For something completely different!" he told the outlet. "Coming off of an action/martial arts spectacle like Shang-Chi, I knew that much of the world was going to expect me to do more kung-fu films."
He further explained how important it is not only for him but also for all Asian individuals to change people's views on him.
"It's always been important to me to constantly challenge people's perceptions of myself, as well as of Asian people as a whole," he added. "While I celebrate legendary actors such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Bruce Lee, I know that my path is very different."
Liu noted that he is not a "master of kung-fu" but just an actor who "trained very hard to embody the character" that he was hired to portray in the Marvel movie.
The actor, who portrays a man called Sam in the upcoming rom-com flick, added that he is beyond excited about playing this role as this one's a character he is "deeply in love with."
"One True Loves" is an adaptation of Jenkin Reid's 2016 novel of the same title. The movie, which is expected to come out next year, is produced and directed by Andy Fickman. Luke Bracey, Michaela Conlin, Phillipa Soo and Tom Everett Scott also star in the film.
Liu will also be seen in the true-life canine adventure movie "Arthur the King," which is helmed by Simon Cellan Jones. Its cast members also include Mark Wahlberg, Michael Landes, Zamantha Díaz, Roger Wasserman, Sharon Gallardo and Luis del Valle.
The actor also lent his voice to the animated TV series "Corner Gas Animated," which came out in September.
