"Sister Wives" star Christine Brown was not happy with Kody Brown "since day one," her aunt Kristyn Decker has claimed.
Decker weighed in on Christine's relationship with Kody, 52, during an appearance on the "Reality Life with Kate Casey" podcast Friday — days after the pair called it quits after 25 years together.
According to Decker, she wasn't surprised by the split because she believes Christine, 49, wasn't genuinely happy in their decades-long polyamorous marriage.
"I could see it coming. I don't think Christine's been genuinely — what I call genuinely happy — for forever, since day one," Decker, who isn't currently in contact with Christine, was quoted by People as saying. "It's kind of impossible to have a marriage when you've got a division like that [with] four women — five, whatever it's going to be, and a lot of children."
Aside from Christine, Kody has three other wives, Meri Brown, Janelle Brown and Robyn Brown, and has children with all four women.
"That's not a partnership. It's not a real marriage," Decker continued. "And so I've just felt bad for her and others from day one. As well, I was in [a plural marriage]. So I had to support that way back when, but it still breaks my heart. I don't think any women are genuinely happy in that."
For Decker, "Sister Wives" doesn't show the reality of a polygamous marriage, including the "true part and the heartache and the sadness" that occurs behind the scenes.
Christine's aunt claimed that her niece and the other wives' true feelings about the marriage "are finally starting to show after all this time." She also said she was happy that people are starting to see the "hardships" of polygamy after the TLC show glamorized it for years.
In "Sister Wives," Christine is friends with Kody's three other wives. However, recently, she didn't hide her unhappiness because she felt that he had a favorite — his fourth wife Robyn.
In the teaser for Season 16, Christine mentioned that Kody already has a perfect family. "Why would I wanna live on a property with a dysfunctional marriage while right over there he has a fully functional marriage? Who would ever want to live like that?" Christine said.
Decker also assumed that her niece's problems with Kody stemmed from his relationships with his other wives.
"I think that as soon as another wife comes into the family, the night the whole dynamics change, the marriage is never going to be the same or the relationship," she explained. "As soon as my husband took a second wife, our marriage was never the same, and it was never going to be. So, I think things start falling apart pretty fast."
Earlier this week, an unnamed source told Us Weekly that Christine decided to leave because Kody has been "completely devoted" to Robyn for "the past five or six years." Some of his other wives also felt that Kody no longer had time for them, the insider added.
Since his split from Christine, rumors have swirled that Meri could be the next one to leave Kody.
"Sister Wives" Season 16 premieres on Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. EST on TLC.
