'Star Wars 7' Teaser Trailer Reveals Who Kylo Ren Is Fighting With His Broadsword-Styler Lightsaber
For months, “Star Wars: the Force Awakens” fans have been obsessed with the broadsword lightsaber wielded by the character Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in the upcoming film. Now, a newly released 15-second teaser for the movie reveals his opponent in those snowy night-time scene.
The teaser was posted discretely to the official “Star Wars” Instagram account, where it is exclusively available, and shows a lot of previously seen footage as well as one very big never-before-seen shot. After opening with Andy Serkis’ familiar voiceover, the teaser shows previously revealed shots of The First Order (kind of like the Empire, but not really) before flashing to a very confused-looking Rey (Daisy Ridley) – that’s when things get interesting.
The infamous shot of Kylo Ren suddenly igniting his red broadsword-style lightsaber in the middle of some snowy woods has been shown time and again in almost every teaser and trailer for the upcoming seventh installment in the “Star Wars” franchise. However, in the 15-second clip, audiences are finally clued in as to what scares him enough to posture up for a fight.
That’s right, Ren is ready to throw down with none other than Finn (John Boyega), who is seen in the teaser above igniting a blue light saber, presumably to take on the evil Knight of Ren, for a yet undetermined reason. It’s unclear what the duo are fighting over, but if allegedly leaked script details from February are to be believed, it may be over an ancient artifact guarded by someone very special to the franchise.
[POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT: The remainder of this article contains theories that may spoil the movie.]
According to the leaks, when we’re first introduced to Luke Skywalker after all these years, his mind is slipping. He’s placed himself in exile for several years now that his powers have grown beyond any other Jedi known to man. He spends most of his time being tortured by inner demons, going crazy and guarding a mysterious artifact that is of great interest to people like Ren. It’s hard to tell from the teaser above if Finn is holding a generic blue lightsaber, or Skywalker’s old weapon from the first and second movies. Perhaps there’s a mentorship relationship in the works?
Unfortunately, while the teaser is one of the cooler things to come out of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” publicity tour so far, nothing about the movie can be confirmed until it hits theaters on Dec. 18.
