'Suicide Squad': Jai Courtney Character Captain Boomerang To Sport 'Crooked' Beard
Jai Courtney, who will play Captain Boomerang in the forthcoming movie “Suicide Squad,” will sport a peculiar beard for his character. The actor revealed the story behind his facial hair in a recent interview with Hit Fix. He said director David Ayer styled his bearded look.
“He just picked up the clippers and started shaving me. I’d shown up quite hairy so you've got freedom to kind of move. And he just started attacking me and at first and I was like 'OK, what are we .. ' And he's like, 'You look like bad news. Looks like your buddy got drunk and cut your hair ... ' And he was like, 'It's good,' and left,” Courtney said.
Courtney described the beard as “crooked.” In the comics, Captain Boomerang is the archenemy of Barry Allen and Wally West. He is the son of an American soldier and an Australian woman and is raised in poverty. During his growing years he develops the skill of making boomerangs and using them for pursuing criminal activities. The character was shown speaking in an American accent for first several comics but later was shown speaking in an Australian accent. John Broome and Carmine Infantine created the character, who first appeared in “Flash” No 117.
In the film, Courtney will sport an Australian accent. “I’m working with a great cast. It’s a wonderful group and I’m really pumped to be working among them. I play an Aussie, which is going to be really fun,” he told Variety.
"Suicide Squad" is being shot in Toronto. Other cast members include Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne and Viola Davis. It concerns a set of supervillains who take up a dangerous task for the government in exchange for less prison time. Ayer wrote the script based on “Suicide Squad” by John Ostrander. The movie is scheduled to open Aug. 5, 2016.
