‘Supergirl’ Season 2 Spoilers: EP Teases Rhea And Lena Luthor’s Relationship
It looks like “Supergirl” is introducing a new mother-daughter duo.
At the end of Season 2, episode 18, Rhea (Teri Hatcher) showed up at Lena Luthor’s (Katie McGrath) office and told her that she has a business proposition for her. While the details of the proposal remain unknown, it seems that Lena is going to accept Rhea’s offer, as executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently revealed that the two characters are going to have a relationship similar to a mother-daughter bond.
“What’s interesting about it is Rhea has got her master plan and she obviously does not come in peace,” Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly. “But what’s interesting to us as writers, and what I think Teri and Katie do so beautifully in their story line together, is Lena’s lost her father, she’s lost her brother, now she’s lost Jack (Rahul Kohli). She’s desperate for a mother to come along and help her, protect her, and take care of her; obviously, Lillian (Brenda Strong), [her stepmother] is not that person. Then along comes Rhea, who is offering to be this guide, this mentor, and this supporter, and somebody who is truly proud of Lena and truly cares about her. Lena is uniquely vulnerable to what Rhea is offering.”

Interestingly, Lena isn’t the only one who might find comfort in this potential partnership. “By the same token, Rhea has been rejected by her child [Mon-El (Chris Wood)],” Kreisberg said. “So as much as Rhea has her ulterior motives, in Lena, she’s looking at the daughter she never had, because this is somebody who is smart, creative, and looks up to her. While there is the grander plot and scheming going on, you really have a daughter who needs a mother and a mother who needs a child. That’s what makes their pairing together so interesting and nuanced.”
Lena currently has no idea about the bad blood between Kara and Rhea, so if Lena ends up accepting Rhea’s offer, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Lena is turning on her friend. McGrath is well aware that some “Supergirl” fans suspect that Lena has a scheme of her own that viewers are totally unaware of thus far, but the actress thinks that her enigmatic character has never been dishonest to Kara.
“I think Lena is a very genuine person,” McGrath told TVLine earlier this month. “What you see is what you get with her. She is honestly trying to do the best she can, and she is honestly a good person. [But] that’s not to say that other people don’t use her for ills. Because she’s the head of this company, she has all of these other relationships that people can manipulate — like her mother.”
“You think she’s going to ‘be a Luthor’ about something, but then she turns around and completely surprises you,” McGrath added of her character. “[That I] guess is what makes her an interesting character to watch — and definitely an interesting character to play.”
Benoist also thinks of Lena and Kara’s friendship the same way McGrath sees it. “I think they have a really special bond,” Benoist told Entertainment Weekly of Lena and Kara’s relationship. “The allure of the Luthor-Super relationship is so fascinating in the comics. I love where they’re taking it now. She has no caution to being friends with Lena. She just sees a good heart right now.”
“Supergirl’s” next episode, Season 2, episode 19, airs on Monday, May 1 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
