Teen Dies After Younger Brother Accidentally Shoots Her At Texas Home
An 18-year-old boy accidentally fatally shot his elder sister at their home in Houston, Texas.
Police responded to the home in Wellington Street on Tuesday morning after receiving information that a person had been shot.
The officers found the 19-year-old girl lying in a pool of blood in a room with a gunshot wound to her neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. They also found the brother in the same room.
Police said the boy accidentally shot the sister while showing her a new gun. An older brother heard a gunshot and informed 911 before providing CPR to the girl.
Authorities said other family members, including the victim’s parents, were inside the residence when the incident took place and that they were "heartbroken," CBS 19 reported.
In a Twitter statement, the Houston Police said, "Our homicide detectives are on scene of a deceased woman in a residence in the 100 block of Wellington St. in north Houston."
"Officers were called about 1 pm. Prelim info is the female was shot as other family members were inside the home," the statement added.
Investigators were talking to witnesses as of Tuesday afternoon. It wasn’t clear the weapon belonged to whom, and if the teen will be charged in connection with the incident.
In a similar incident last month, a 4-year-old boy accidentally shot and injured his older brother while playing with a loaded handgun in Illinois. Officers arrived at the home and rushed the 8-year-old boy to a local hospital for treatment. Police said the brothers were playing with the weapon when it accidentally discharged, striking the older sibling. The handgun belonged to a family member; however, it wasn’t clear how they got hold of the weapon. The victim was recovering at the time.
In another incident earlier this year, a 7-year-old boy was hospitalized after his younger sibling accidentally shot him in the neck after retrieving a firearm from a gun safe at their Washington home.
