A 15-year-old teen in Nashville has been taken into custody for stabbing a 14-year-old classmate in his school’s gymnasium on Thursday afternoon.

The police said the suspect walked up to his classmate and stabbed him in the neck with a folding knife. The school staff gave him first aid before medics arrived and rushed him to a local hospital for surgery. The incident took place around 1 p.m. in Overton High School’s gymnasium and the attack was caught on school video surveillance, the Tennessean reported

"We don't know what was occurring before that moment. We're still trying to sort that out," Police Chief John Drake told reporters outside the school Thursday.

Meanwhile, the suspect surrendered himself after the attack. Since he had suffered minor injuries to his hands in the incident, he was treated at another hospital before being taken to the police headquarters.

In a statement, Dr. Adrienne Battle, Director of Schools, thanked the medics for their quick response.

"We're thankful for the quick response of the team hear as well as our school resource officer for responding quickly and ensuring that no other students were impacted," said Battle, NBC-affiliated television station WSMV reported.

"Our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers are with the students involved and we do pray for a speedy recovery for the student," he added.

Rachael Ann Elrod, a school board member representing the area where the school is located, also issued a statement calling the incident "tragic."

"The incident today between two students at John Overton High School is tragic. The health and safety of our students and staff is of highest concern, and I'm grateful to our JOHS staff that provided immediate aid and response," she said, WSMV reported.

"My prayers and thoughts go to the affected families, but we also must evaluate the policies and changes needed to prevent these types of incidents. Our city's children deserve supports for their education and well-being, and we must prioritize their social and emotional needs," she added.

The accused is currently facing attempted criminal homicide charges, and the victim is reported to be in a stable condition.
