Transfer Rumors: Newcastle Could Be New Home To Unhappy Everton Defender
KEY POINTS
- Newcastle United is looking at Yerry Mina to bolster its poor defensive line
- Mina can rejuvenate his football career with Everton hardly giving him chances
- Newcastle is ready to pay $22.45 million to Everton for Mina
Newcastle United is leaving no stones unturned, and it appears there is another name on the club's radar.
Hammers manager Eddie Howe knows he needs to also bolster his defensive line, and it seems Yerry Mina is being considered for the role per a report from Jeunes Footeux.
The 27-year-old has had a rough go since arriving at Goodison Park from Barcelona in 2018. The Colombian footballer has already spent three and a half seasons with the Toffees.
Although he has played 84 games in total for Everton, Mina has seen action only in seven matches this season.
It appears he has struggled to get a regular spot since coming off an injury. He has been given chances by Rafa Benitez, but the time given does not appear to be enough.
Hence, there is a huge chance that he may not be signed to a new deal.
To somehow recoup something from the Colombian, a potential sale by the Toffees to Newcastle may happen in next month’s transfer window.
Newcastle is reportedly ready to shell out £17 million ($22.45 million) to get Mina to their side.
The need to beef up their defense was apparent in their last match against Leicester City. They lost to the Foxes, 4-0, and part of that was their inability to put Jamie Vardy in check.
Following their performance, calls were made for Newcastle United to overhaul their defense. One of them was former Premier League forward Noel Whelan.
“The quality just isn’t there at the back for Newcastle,” he said via Football Insider. “There’s been far too many mistakes from center-halves.”
At present, it is Jamaal Lascelles leading the defensive for Newcastle United. Also, there are Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark or Fede Fernandez.
But with the mix struggling to hold up defensively, Newcastle is now skimming for available talent that can improve its defensive end by January.
Aside from Mina, other names are likely to gain steam in the coming weeks.
Everton fans reacted to the interest of Newcastle in Mina on social media, and some felt it would be best to let the Colombian move on but at the right price.
