KEY POINTS

  • Trevor Noah said he has no beef with a person "who has expressed openly that they're dealing with a mental health issue"
  • The Comedy Central host clarified that he was only "concerned" about the rapper
  • Noah's comments came months after he discussed West's treatment of Kim Kardashian on social media

Trevor Noah denied claims that he has "beef" with Kanye West.

During a segment break on a recent episode of "The Daily Show," the 38-year-old TV host shut down an audience member who asked him why he is "beefing" with West.

The interaction came months after Noah, who said he "grew up loving" West's music, discussed on his show the rapper's treatment of his ex-wife Kim Kardashian on social media amid their divorce.

"Why am I beefing with Kanye? That's an interesting way to phrase it because a beef has to go both ways," Noah told the audience member in a behind-the-scenes TikTok video posted by the show Friday. "...In my limited understanding of the world, beef has always been something that generally will happen between two hip-hop artists. I've never beefed with Kanye West. I was concerned about Kanye West."

"If somebody says to me that they have a mental health issue, and they say to everyone that when they don't take their medication they're unable to control themselves," Noah continued, "and then everyone ignores when that person is having an episode and they haven't taken the medication, and then they platform the person and then they put them up...I sometimes think it's a little s–tty, to be honest with you."

Noah then shared that his grandfather was bipolar and would "act in a certain way and could do certain things" during a mental health episode. While he didn't claim that West is bipolar, the host said he found it "strange" that others are more concerned about "going viral" as a result of West's comments.

"I don't have beef with a human being who has expressed openly that they're dealing with a mental health issue. I don't have beef with that human being," Noah said. "What I have beef with is us as a society not coming together around the person and going like, 'Hey, maybe this is not the moment to put a microphone in your face so that you just go off saying everything.'"

In a "Daily Show" episode in March, Noah expressed concern over how West was treating Kardashian and her then-boyfriend Pete Davidson on social media after the Yeezy founder released a graphic music video in which he appeared to decapitate the "Saturday Night Live" alum.

"What I see from the situation is a woman who wants to live her life without being harassed by an ex-boyfriend or an ex-husband or an ex-anything," Noah said at the time of Kardashian, who filed for divorce from West in February 2021. "You may not feel sorry for Kim because she's rich and famous, because she appropriates Black culture ... but what she's going through is terrifying to watch and shines a spotlight on what so many women go through when they choose to leave."

West responded by directing a racial slur at Noah via Instagram, which led to the musician being temporarily banned from the platform for 24 hours.

Noah responded to West's mockery by commenting on the rapper's now-deleted post, saying that it broke his heart "to see you like this" and that West was "on a path that's dangerously close to peril and pain."

The Comedy Central host urged the Grammy winner to learn the difference between fighting for his family and fighting with them, adding that he "never want[s] to read that headline about" West.

"I'd rather be the idiot who spoke up and said something to you in life, than the cool guy who said nothing and then mourns for you in prison or the grave," Noah continued, after saying that he didn't mind being "an idiot for caring" if West was only joking about it all.

Shortly after the exchange, West was pulled from the Grammys lineup due to his "concerning online behavior."

Noah, who hosted the 2022 ceremony in April, reacted by tweeting: "I said counsel Kanye[,] not cancel Kanye."

In recent weeks, West sparked controversy for debuting a "White Lives Matter" T-shirt during a Yeezy fashion show and making anti-Semitic comments on social media and in interviews, including an episode of "Drink Champs," which host N.O.R.E. has since claimed he regrets platforming.

The rapper was also interviewed by Piers Morgan, Tucker Carlson and Chris Cuomo following his comments on "Drink Champs," according to People.
