KEY POINTS

  • Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were named Time's 2020 Person of the Year Thursday
  • President Donald Trump was among the four finalists in the magazine's Person of the Year shortlist
  • Some Twitter users approved of Time's pick, while others were disappointed

President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris defeated President Donald Trump once more after they were named Time magazine's 2020 Person of the Year.

On Thursday, Time announced the four finalists for Person of the Year, which is awarded to the individual or group who "affected the news or our lives the most, for better or worse." Aside from Biden, Harris and Trump, others who made the shortlist include the frontline health workers and Dr. Anthony Fauci and the racial justice movements that organized nationwide protests after the death of George Floyd.

The accolade ultimately went to Biden and Harris, which had a number of netizens taking to Twitter to mock Trump.

"lol Trump loses to Biden AGAIN. He should be getting a free 6-inch sub at this point," one commented.

"Perfect! I love the selection of both @JoeBiden and @SenKamalaHarris as 'Person Of The Year,' both very deserving. Added bonus, Biden beat Trump ... again!" another tweeted.

"Trump lost to Biden again, wonder if he'll ask to get a recount of the votes for POTY," a third user wrote.

Some did not approve of Time's pick for Person of the Year, insisting that there were more deserving candidates.

"What have they done in 2020?" one wrote.

"All it takes to be @TIME Magazine's Person of the Year, now, is being 'better than Trump'? My, we have lowered our collective standards, haven't we? Who's next? The Night Stalker, because he's 'better than Manson'?" one commented.

"To be honest, I'm surprised. I thought for sure Fauci and the Frontline Workers would have been named person of the year, or the Racial Justice Movement. But, I'm happy for them, and can't say I'm necessarily upset - especially since they named Fauci 'Guardian of the Year!" a third user wrote.

"for what? literally what did they even do? PERSON of the YEAR. this year. how about frontline doctors and nurses? scientists?" a different netizen asked.

Time has named a Person of the Year, which the magazine describes as "an individual but sometimes multiple people who greatly impacted the country and world during the calendar year," since 1927. Last year's award went to environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

This year, Time magazine recognized Fauci, the government's leading epidemiologist, and frontline health workers as the Guardians of the Year. Porche Bennett-Bey, Assa Traoré and other racial-justice organizers were also awarded the accolade.
