'Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Spoilers: Did Elena Get The Cure? Damon Makes Shocking Decision In Episode 19 [RECAP]
“The Vampire Diaries” dropped shocker after shocker in Season 6, episode 19. After getting his humanity back, Stefan (Paul Wesley) was on a mission to get Caroline’s (Candice Accola) emotions turned back on. As if preventing Caroline from killing more people wasn’t enough, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) worried that his mother (Annie Wersching) would release all of her killer friends now that she had the ascendant. However, Damon didn’t realize that his mother would use the cure as leverage to try to get her friends back.
In order to get the normal Caroline back, Stefan decided that he would pretend that he still didn’t have his humanity. He had a simple plan: “Torture her until she breaks,” he explained.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) had a letter from Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre). Caroline’s mom wanted her to read it after she died, but it arrived just after Caroline turned off her humanity. They were hoping the letter would bring her back -- but they had to get her to read it.
Stefan took her to a bed and breakfast under the guise that they were going to have sex and eat a couple employees. Damon shot her with vervain and turned the B&B room into a vampire-proof jail cell while she was unconscious. Stefan made it look like he was trapped with her.
Through the cell door, Elena gave them the letter, and Caroline recalled her mother teaching her how to write her own name. It seemed for a second like she was feeling something, but then she told Stefan to burn the letter. He questioned her decision, but his concern made Caroline question his actions. He had to burn the letter to keep his cover.
Elena thought that she blew her chance, but Damon assured her that it was good that she couldn’t torture very well. Damon found out that Alaric and Jo were checking out the B&B as a honeymoon spot, so he asked Elena about her human marriage fantasies. Elena wanted to live in New York with Damon, train to be a surgeon and have a couple of kids. Caroline’s screaming stopped Damon from revealing his fantasies. He went up to give her the police reports from all the people she killed.
Caroline was unaffected by seeing all the harm she'd caused, and she turned the tables on Damon. “I’m curious Damon. How does it feel to know that you can’t give someone the life she really wants?” she asked. She said Elena would always have to settle because she never wanted to be a vampire.
'What Do You Want Me To Say?'
When they were alone, Damon asked Elena to be honest. “What do you want me to say? That I’m never going to be 100% OK with being a vampire for the rest of eternity?” Elena asked. “Fine, but I’m OK with that because I get to be with you.”
Back in the cell, Stefan kept turning down Caroline’s advances. She was making him nervous, and suddenly, she realized that Stefan had his humanity. She snapped his neck and it looked like she kicked down the door to her cell.
Caroline was speeding in a stolen car and was pulled over by a cop. It was her mother. Liz pointed a gun at her daughter and said she was under arrest for murder. She claimed that her daughter wouldn’t do something like this. Caroline woke up in the cell. She knew that Stefan put that vision in her head, so she staked him.
As she twisted the stake, Stefan gave her another vision, one of his memories. He was borrowing a needle and thread to fix the teddy bear that Caroline stole from Bonnie (Kat Graham) when they were children. Liz said she wanted Stefan to be with Caroline. The humanity-less vampire wanted to see the rest of the memory, but Stefan didn’t see Liz write the letter. Caroline was in his memory and couldn’t interact with her mother.
Caroline asked what was in the letter and started crying as she realized she burned it. She realized everything that she’d done. “I ruined everything,” she cried.
Meanwhile, Damon told Bonnie that he gave his mother Lily the ascendant. Bonnie was angry and told him to fix it, but Lily was already hoping to see the witch. Bonnie was going to meet Lily at the grill, but she was running late. Enzo (Michael Malarkey) stepped in to keep Lily occupied.
Enzo thought Lily was lying when she said she was imprisoned for 100 years, but he soon realized that he wasn’t abandoned. She said she would’ve never done that to him and assured him that she wasn’t committing any mass murders these days.
Lily decided to bring Enzo back to her house since Bonnie never showed up. As Lily and Enzo got to the house, Bonnie found the ascendant and snuck out. Lily freaked out when she realized the device was missing. She said that her friends were the only people keeping her from being a ripper. When Enzo claimed that her real family was in this world, Lily kicked him out.
The Salvatore matriarch called Damon and told him that he had to find the ascendant. She would destroy the cure for vampirism if he didn’t. Damon found Bonnie trying to destroy the object. The witch said that she was putting herself first for the first time. Even when Damon said his mother had the cure, Bonnie didn’t stop.
She wasn’t ready to risk her life again. She didn’t think he even had any plans to give Elena the cure. She knew that he was too scared of what could happen if Elena was human. She said that he could take the ascendant if he wanted to deal with a ton of people who wanted him dead. Damon let her destroy it.
Lily wasn’t happy that Damon returned empty-handed. She threw the box Damon kept the cure in into the fire and said that Damon could rest assured knowing he would have Elena forever. However, that wasn’t a punishment. Lily revealed that the box was empty.
'I Felt No Pain'
Elena found a bunch of rose petals and candles with a jewelry box. She opened it to find the cure. She ran to Damon and his mother and looked so happy.
“I left it out for you to find since Damon was never going to offer it to you,” Lily said.
Damon’s mother left to go for a walk, and Enzo came to meet her when she called. He said he was loyal to her, and she revealed that she killed a man in cold blood. “I felt no pain, no despair, no loneliness,” Lily said.
Enzo looked in the car she was standing next to and saw she had ripped a man’s head off. She was a ripper again. She started crying, and Enzo comforted her.
Back at the house, Elena finally realized all of that talk about their future wasn’t just fun and games. Damon said that his fantasy of five years from now scared him. He didn’t see big plans in the future. Damon just wanted to be with Elena, nothing more. He admitted that he feared losing her if she took the cure, and that's why he was going to keep it from her.
“It’s just too complicated. We’re going to give it to someone else,” she said.
Damon realized he couldn’t let Elena give up the life she wanted. “You’re going to take the cure Elena, and I’m going to take it with you,” Damon said. “I don’t want to face my future without you. I’ll become human too.”
