‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 7 Spoilers: Will Stefan and Damon Forgive Lily? Paul Wesley Teases Salvatore Matriarch's Possible Redemption

Will the Salvatore family ever be on good terms? It’s possible that Lily (Annie Wersching) could be forgiven in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 … but not before her sons take her hostage. They’ll try to make their mother see Julian’s (Todd Lasance) manipulative ways in episode 7, but Lily might be the one who changes the boys’ perspective instead. She’ll reveal some secrets from her human life that could change everything.

Paul Wesley explained that his character Stefan and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will at least understand their mother a little more after the upcoming episode. “I think it makes them ... initially makes them hostile and then makes them more empathetic to her struggles because she reveals some key things that they didn't really know,” Wesley told BuddyTV. “They thought she was just being a selfish person and really just not a good mom. And ultimately, there was a softer side to her that they were unaware of.”

While Lily reveals her past to the boys, viewers will get to see flashbacks to her human life when Damon and Stefan were children. Although they know that their father was abusive, they apparently don’t know everything about their parents’ relationship.

“In the flashbacks, you really get to see the relationship Lily had with Giuseppe and what the boys think and what actually happened to her were two different things,” Wersching told TV Guide. “And it's really been a driving force in her entire motherhood to these boys, her entire existence. You'll see in these flashbacks pretty much why she did or didn't do the things that she did.”

Even some of the things that they resent their mother for might actually be her way of protecting them. Though it isn’t addressed on the show, Wersching explained that even Lily’s idea to curse Elena (Nina Dobrev) might’ve been the best option.

“In my mind and how I had to justify things is that she was also dealing with Kai in this scenario and I feel like he had an even more dangerous, insane plan for Elena,” the actress explained. “I think she was trying to play both sides and get what she needed from Kai, get the help with her Heretics, but not completely annihilate Elena and make it so that there would be hope and that she wouldn't completely ruin Damon's life, which of course he thinks she has.”

While Lily will work on getting the boys to understand her, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) will try to win Lily’s affection. In a sneak peak from “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7, episode 7, the vampire goes to pick up Oscar’s (Tim Kang) car. He is only looking for the vehicle because Julian said he wants it. “You’re not doing this to stop a psychopath. You just want the girl,” Bonnie (Kat Graham) points out. She gives him some advice on winning over a woman, advice that he’ll likely take since he and Bonnie get together in the future. Watch the sneak peek below:
