‘Westworld’ Season 1 Finale: Ed Harris Has No Clue What The Maze Really Means
There is so much scrutiny concerning the center of the maze in “Westworld” Season 1, since it reportedly has the power to free all the hosts from their monotonous and torturous existence. But Ed Harris, who plays the Man in Black in the HBO show, said that even he has no clue what the maze really means and represents.
“I gotta tell you, I’m still not quite clear on what the maze was supposed to have represented. But the fact that it didn’t really mean anything, or didn’t exist… I haven’t penetrated that. But I haven’t seen the finale yet,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
He also had no clue that his character is the older version of William (Jimmi Simpson). Harris admitted that he never spoke about that popular fan theory with Simpson, since “there were certain weeks we were shooting three episodes at once, so it wasn’t always really clear what the heck was going on.”
Due to this, he simply played the Man in Black based on his own interpretation of the character. “As far as I was concerned, I was playing my character. Whatever was going on with him in the past, is the in past. I’m in the present time, that’s my business, and it’s pretty much what I was concerned about, to tell you the truth,” he said.
Earlier, Harris told BBC Radio 4 that he has been asked to reprise his role as the older version of William next season. “I was just talking to Jonah Nolan last night, who’s a creator of this thing with his wife Lisa Joy, and yeah, they’re doing another season,” Harris said. “They’re going to do 10 more episodes, and I will be involved.”
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Simpson. “My William has served his purpose. As of now, I’ll be done at the end of Season 1,” Simpson told Vanity Fair.
“Westworld” Season 2 will return to HBO on 2018.
