What We Know About Matt Lauer And Annette Roque's Marriage And Rumored Divorce
It's been a couple of weeks since Matt Lauer's firing from NBC for allegations of sexual misconduct, and for right now, it appears his 20-year marriage to wife Annette Roque is truly up in the air.
Since news broke of Lauer's behavior and axing from the "Today" show, reports have been everywhere in regards to status of his marriage to Roque, who had initially filed for divorce in 2006 before withdrawing the papers. It's not entirely clear what the couple's marital status is at the moment, but here's everything we know so far.
Annette Roque Is Still In The U.S.
Despite earlier reports that Roque had not only left her husband, but fled the country with their two younger children, have since been proven false. Page Six reported earlier this month that she had taken daughter Romy, 14, and son Thijs, 11, with her back to her native Netherlands. The report was proven false after she was still spotted on Long Island.
Roque And Lauer Are Both Not Wearing Their Rings
However, though Roque is still in the U.S., things are definitely strained between the couple. Lauer was initially spotted for the first time since his firing wearing his wedding ring, though it has since been removed. One week after the scandal broke, Roque was also spotted in Sag Harbor without her ring on. Her father spoke to the Daily Mail at the time to claim that she wasn't "planning on staying" with Lauer.
Roque And Lauer Are Still Living Together And Reportedly "Trying" To Work Things Out
E! News reports that for now, the couple is still living together under the same roof, and spending time together with their kids, after they took them to ride horses together recently. Furthermore, Lauer is allegedly hopeful that he and Roque will be able to reconcile and stay together.
Sources told People Magazine that they are currently still together and trying to work things out for their kids, with one source insisting Lauer doesn't want a divorce, while a second maintained that Roque is angry, hence the pair not wearing their rings. However, while they haven't made an official decision about the marriage, they aren't hiding their problems from their kids either.
"The kids are noticing this, but they're being very open about this and explaining everything," the source said.
Lauer has also previously been open about their semingly unconventional marriage (while he worked for NBC he stayed in New York City during the week, while Roque and their children lived full-time on Long Island), admitting that things haven't always been smooth. However, he also stated back in 2010 that there was ofen a lot of false stories promoted about the relationship.
"Have we had a completely perfect, easy marriage? No. But the stories you've read over the years are not true," he said at the time. " I don't think we're any different than any married couple that's been together for over 12 years. The accusations [of infidelity] are ridiculous and I'm not going to [dignify] them with an answer. It's not true."
However, Some Reports Claim A Divorce Is "Imminent."
However, despite their seeming to be working on things, another source claimed to Life and Style that a divorce is still planned, and Roque is waiting until after the holidays. However, the source says that she feels too betrayed by what happened, and she's especially angry that their three children (the couple also has a 16-year-old son Jack), have to deal with the news as well.
"She's furious with Matt for leaving this legacy for their kids," an alleged friend told the magazine. "Matt let her down, yes, but their children [having to deal with it] --that is what makes her especially angry."
Another source claimed that she "has survived one gut punch after another over the scandal," and "She's told a small circle of friends and relatives that she feels completely betrayed."
Another source allegedly confirmed she was planning to divorce him after the holidays to Hollywood Life.
"Annette is best for her kids and that is putting on a brave face while carrying on through at least the holiday season as a family together" a source reportedly told the website. "Annette is making the bold decision, as hard as it has been on her, but to leave Matt right now."
The source said she would "hold her breath through the holidays, as painful as the entire ordeal has been for her," the source continued, adding that her main goal "is to protect her kids." However, the source said she "plans on making significant changes after the holidays and the New Year."
