When Does ‘Wynonna Earp’ Come Back? Season 4 Is Officially Happening
“Wynonna Earp” has officially been saved. After production delays sent both the fans and cast into panicked confusion, the Syfy series is finally starting work on Season 4.
In a press release on Tuesday, IDW entertainment, in partnership with Syfy, Space and SEVEN24 Films, announced that “Wynonna Earp” has received the greenlight to start production. Season 4 will start filming this summer.
Unfortunately, that puts them way behind schedule. The show will not return this summer. Instead, “Wynonna Earp” Season 4 is expected to start airing in summer 2020.
The delay was caused by a lack of funding. Public filings revealed that Syfy renewed “Wynonna Earp” for Seasons 4 and 5, but they only cover about half the cost. IDW Entertainment is supposed to finance the rest, but the company was strapped for funding. To help fix the issue, they’ve brought in Cineflix Studios to co-produce, and Cineflix Rights will handle international sales for the series.
According to Vulture, the studio took so long to get the funds together that contracts actually lapsed for several main cast members, including Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp), Tim Rozon (Doc Holliday), Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Waverly Earp) and Katherine Barrell (Nicole Haught). However, they’re expected to return.
“Everyone involved with ‘Wynonna Earp’ recognizes how special the show and the audience behind it is,” showrunner Emily Andras told Vulture. “Once in a lifetime, really. So without getting into specifics, I can say, most if not all of your favorites will be back on your screen — or working hard behind the scenes — for Season 4.”
The news comes after months of fans fighting for the show. They made #FightForWynonna trend on social media, wrote letters to IDW and even bought Times Square billboards.
While “Wynonna Earp” isn’t coming back for another year, fans can at least enjoy the show on Netflix. Season 3 will join the first two installments on July 16.
