KEY POINTS

  • Reportedly active between 2007 and 2017
  • Would target men seen out at nightclubs in Manchester's city centre
  • Presented himself as a "good samaritan" before taking the victims back to his flat and reportedly drugging them

England’s most prolific rapist, allegedly active for over a decade, was sentenced Monday for reportedly drugging and raping 48 men at his Manchester home.

Reynhard Sinaga, 36, was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty on 159 sexual offense charges stemming from his alleged activities. Sinaga will have to serve 30 years in prison before authorities consider his release.

But who is the man accused of being “the most prolific rapist in British legal history?”

Sinaga was originally born to a wealthy family in Depok, Indonesia, and earned his first degree in architecture at the University of Indonesia. He moved to Manchester in 2007 and reportedly spent most of his time in school. He was described as a “perpetual student” who had earned four degrees and had been working on his doctorate when he became active.

Shortly after moving to Manchester, he reportedly started targeting men he met out at the nightclubs in Manchester’s active city center. The men he was allegedly targeting were heterosexual men in the late teens and early 20s who had been drinking. Most of his reported victims said they were drunk and were heading home or had been separated from their friends when Sinaga would approach.

Police described Sinaga’s appearance as a “Good Samaritan” who did not look physically threatening. He would reportedly invite the men back to his nearby apartment to either rest or wait for their friends or partners. One victim said Sinaga “didn't seem like an imposing character” who seemed dedicated to his online studies.

Once in his apartment, Sinaga would allegedly give the men a shot that reportedly caused them to pass out. The victims would then wake up in the morning confused, disoriented, and barely able to remember what happened the night before. Most said they didn’t even know they had been raped until police approached them about their night. However, one said he reportedly awoke momentarily in Sinaga’s flat while allegedly being penetrated.

Investigators suspected the liquid to be the drug GHB, a colorless and odorless powder dissolved in liquid that is commonly used as a date-rape drug. Small doses reportedly cause feelings of euphoria, while larger doses can cause unconsciousness or death.

The investigation into Sinaga’s activities became the largest rape investigation in the history of the United Kingdom. He came under investigation in 2017 after a teen victim reportedly woke up and tried to fight Sinaga off before Sinaga responded by yelling for help to deal with an “intruder.” The teen was arrested for assault after Sinaga was found injured by authorities and taken to a nearby hospital.

However, police became suspicious after Sinaga kept asking for his phone, which was still at his apartment. Once it arrived at the hospital, he reportedly provided several false pin numbers before trying to grab it away from the attending officer after giving the correct one. The officer then seized the phone as evidence and reportedly found a video of Sinaga raping the teen who had been arrested.

Police reportedly discovered 800 videos of Sinaga sexually assaulting various men during the course of their investigation.

“Reynhard Sinaga is the most prolific rapist in British legal history,” North West Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Ian Rushton told reporters. “His extreme sense of sexual entitlement almost defies belief and he would no doubt still be adding to his staggering tally had he not been caught.”

While 48 of the alleged victims testified to Sinaga’s activities, police reportedly found evidence of him bringing home over 100 men. Police have not identified 70 of the men and are asking them to come forward.
