Why Are Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez Divorcing? Couple Wishes Each Other 'Nothing But Happiness'
Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez announced their decision to file for divorce Tuesday. Rumors about their marriage ending have swirled for months though nothing has been confirmed until now. The couple, who have been married for just two years, released a joint statement detailing their reasons for separating.
The statement released to TMZ said Berry and Martinez, both 49, were in agreement about their decision to divorce. The couple said they would be moving forward with "love and respect," and wished nothing but the best for each other. The site reported they will be focusing on their son, Maceo, 2. Berry reportedly filed the divorce documents, sighting irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Both the Oscar-winning actress and her estranged husband have asked for privacy during this difficult time.
"It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce," the statement read. "We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus for what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life, and we hope that you respect our, and most importantly our children's privacy, as we go through this difficult period."
In August, TMZ shut down reports of imminent divorce surrounding the couple. The site reported that while many had noticed Berry out and about without a wedding ring, it was likely because she lost the jewelry during a trip to Mexico for the Acapulco International Film Festival. Sources claimed the ring fell off her finger or was left at a table and snagged by another guest.
The couple was first introduced in 2010 while filming "Dark Tide." They were secretly engaged in 2011, although the news did not go public until January 2012. Berry and Martinez were married in July 2013 at the Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France. Berry has one other child, Nahla, 7, with former beau Gabriel Aubry. They couple split in 2010.
