Meghan Markle always walks behind Kate Middleton for a reason.

A number of netizens noticed that when the Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex are together, Markle always walks behind Middleton. This prompted one netizen to turn to the online forum Quora for answers.

According to Chris Smith, a former retired high school History teacher, this is due to their line of succession to the British throne.

“The former Catherine Middleton, now The Duchess of Cambridge is married to the 2nd in line to the throne. As such she takes precedence over the vast majority of women … sometimes Anne and always Camilla are more important than she is (sometimes Beatrice, Eugenie and Alexandra as well),” Smith wrote.

“The former Meghan Markle, now The Duchess of Sussex is married to the 6th in the line of succession and so is behind The Duchess of Cambridge in precedence at all times.”

He added that in due time, Markle will have to curtsy to Middleton and Prince Harry will have to bow down to his sister-in-law. In short, Middleton is “more important” than Markle.

Diana Black agreed and said that this is due to the people’s expectations. Middleton is the future Queen Consort. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have precedence over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The user pointed out that it was “awkward” and “bad manners” to do so. She felt that Markle thinks she is more important than Prince Harry.

When Middleton and Markle attended Wimbledon last year, the Duchess of Cambridge walked ahead of the Duchess of Sussex. According to veteran royal photographer Mark Steward, there was no rivalry there. Markle let Middleton lead the way.
