Why Lana Del Rey Removed ‘Cola’ From ‘L.A. To The Moon’ Tour

Lana Del Rey has unfortunately removed her fan-favorite song “Cola” from her upcoming “L.A. to the Moon” tour. However, she has a good reason behind this move, for the song was apparently inspired by now controversial film producer Harvey Weinstein.

On Wednesday, Del Rey revealed to MTV News why she cut “Cola” from her tour. “When I wrote that song, I supposed I had a Harvey Weinstein/Harry Winston-type character in mind. I envisioned, like, a benevolent, diamond-bestowing-upon-starlets visual, like a Citizen Kane or something. I’m not really sure. I thought it was funny at the time, and I obviously find it really sad now,” she said.

Delving deep into the issue, the “Born to Die” hitmaker admitted that she is no longer “comfortable” singing the song in front of the crowd after Weinstein was met with dozens of sexual harassment and assault allegations. Del Rey then firmly said that she chose to retire the song for it “would be the only right thing to do.”

Released as part of her “Born to Die: The Paradise Edition” album in 2012, the pop rock centers on having an affair with an older man. The lyrics mention Weinstein at one point, according to Us Weekly. “Harvey’s in the sky with diamonds / And it’s making me crazy / All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby.”

Interestingly, an entertainment industry source told Page Six last month that Weinstein had actually pursued Del Rey in the past. However, the songstress “rebuffed” the film producer’s advances, for she was already in a relationship. This was said to be what drove Del Rey to write the track with Weinstein in mind. But then Weinstein was not pleased that his name was included in the sing, so he asked the singer to change it. Del Rey caved and she henceforth sang the line as, “Ah, he’s in the sky with diamonds / And he’s making me crazy.”

In early October, Weinstein came under fire after his alleged sexual misconduct was exposed by The New York Times and The New Yorker. Several actresses, including Angelina Jolie, Kate Beckinsale, Minka Kelly, Rose McGowan and Gwyneth Paltrow have since come out with claims of having been sexually harassed by the 65-year-old Miramax co-founder.

Del Rey’s decision to remove “Cola” from her tour could also be viewed as her way of showing support to the victims of Weinstein. “I support the women who have come forward. I think they’re really brave for doing that.”
