Why Meghan Markle Will Never Be Treated Like Royalty In America
Meghan Markle became a member of the prestigious British royal family when she married Prince Harry in 2018. While the former “Suits” star has managed to find love with an actual Prince, the perks and preferential treatment that comes along with being royalty won’t apply during Meghan’s trips to America.
When Meghan steps out in the UK, commoners bow to her as a sign of respect, but the founder of Beaumont Etiquette, Myka Meier revealed Americans won’t show the Duchess of Sussex the same courtesy.
“In American culture, we do not curtsy or bow as a sign of respect, and therefore you would not do so if you came upon a royal in the United States,” she told People.
Meier then reflected on Kate Middleton and Prince William’s informal meeting with the 44th president of the United States. Upon their introduction, the US leader did not bow to the Royals, instead, he greeted them with a friendly American gesture.
“Just as when Kate and Prince William visited America in 2014, we saw then-President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama simply extend a handshake to welcome them,” Meier said.
“It would be the same if you were to greet the Duchess of Sussex in NYC,” she added.
While Americans may not treat Meghan like royalty, Meier advised US residents to be mindful of their manners if they come in contact with a member of the royal family.
