Why Prince William ‘Shoved’ Princess Diana Away After Princes Charles’ Affair Betrayal
Following Princess Diana’s Panorama interview with Martin Bashir in 1995, Prince William felt completely betrayed by his mother for sharing details about Prince Charles’ affair with the world.
However, when the interview was over and Diana tried to comfort her embarrassed son, Prince William lashed out and rejected his mother’s embrace.
In the 2012 biography “Prince William: Born to be King,” author Penny Junor revealed the Princess of Wales visited a 13-year-old William at Eton College prior to the broadcast of her interview.
Although she allegedly promised her son the conversation wouldn’t contain anything controversial, Diana insisted William would be proud of her.
Unfortunately, after viewing the interview, a young Prince William was upset with his mother. During her chat with Bashir, Diana shared details about her affair with James Hewitt and Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Junor described William as “angry, aghast and no doubt humiliated at the family secrets she laid bare before some 20 million viewers.”
When the Prince saw his mother for the first time after the interview, his emotions got the best of him. “He started shouting and crying and, when she tried to put her arms around him, he shoved her away,” the royal biographer wrote.
“He was furious that she hadn’t told him what she was going to do, furious that she had spoken badly of his father [and] furious that she had mentioned Hewitt.”
Simone Simmons, the author of “Diana: The Last Word,” revealed William was young and his primary concern was what his friends would think following the revealing interview.
“He hated the idea of everything being on television and he knew his friends would poke fun at him, which they did. He felt she had made a fool of herself, and him,” Simmons explained.
